Dzień trzeci (Day Three)

Updated: Jun 7

Text and photos by Michael Anes except where noted.

Whew, is the number three causing havoc in our language classes for our group! For your reference, the above would be pronounced DJane (very soft D at the front) Tsh-etsy. And - you'll be tested on this! We started with language class and our teacher Marta had us do mini-interviews. Here's some pictures of that process as it happened.

Then we had a short break (some people, including your author, took a little catnap) before heading out by tram with Sebastian, our Krakow guide for the week, to the part of the city called Kazimierz (Kaz-ih-meersh). Kazimierz is named after Kazimierz the Great, a Polish King of the 1300s who, famously, opened Poland to the world and welcomed Jews to Polish land. He was a model of religious tolerance in general at the time. And, importantly for us, Kazimierz is the former and present Jewish quarter of the city. Our destination was a rather young (20 years old) and small museum called the Galicia Jewish Museum. We toured the permanent photo exhibit showing photos from the 1980s and 1990s of Jewish buildings and spaces of the region. Our guide was from Germany and had only just completed high school there.

As always, thanks for reading, and tomorrow we'll be back with photos from Wawel cathedral and castle.
